Desde que inició el 2013 hemos estado haciendo una retrospectiva de los discos más memorables que cumplen 20 años en una sección titulada LUNES DE NOSTALGIA (ese fue el mejor nombre que se nos ocurrió).
En el año de 1993 el rock alternativo dominaba los playlists de las estaciones de radio de Estados Unidos y la programación de MTV. En aquel año, la llamada cultura grunge de Nirvana y Pearl Jam estaban a la cabeza. Los Smashing Pumpkins estaban gozando de una explosión de popularidad, y bandas del underground como The Breeders y The Flaming Lips recibían algo de la atención que merecían.
En el gabacho, el Hip-Hop estaba agarrando fuerza gracias a Wu-Tang Clan y a Snoop Dogg, mientras que el metal se mantenía vigente (a diferencia del hard rock que murió con los 80) al experimentar con nuevos estilos. Por ejemplo, Tool y Porcupine Tree exploraban los límites del género en el ámbito progresivo, mientras que Death, Earth y Neurosis establecían sus reputaciones en el Doom Metal.
Del otro lado del Atlántico, bandas que sobrevivieron los 80 como Depeche Mode, New Order y Pet Shop Boys se vieron obligadas a modificar su sonido para adpatarse a la nueva ola del britpop, liderada por Blur, The Verve, Suede y Manic Street Preachers.
Por último, no podemos darles muchas alabanzas al rock latino de 1993 -sus años fuertes fueron 92 y 94-. El rock en español tuvo que recurrir a Fobia en México, los Héroes en España y a los Rodríguez en Argentina para no caer en el olvido… entre otros esfuerzos notables.
